Diné Bi Sin: Listening to the Land with Dakota Mace

Event Date: Tue, Jan 13, 2026 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM MST

Join us for an evening in January as artist and photographer Dakota Mace discusses the inspiration behind her latest exhibition, Dahodiyinii, and her current projects that explore the relationship between people, Land, and memory through a wide-ranging interdisciplinary practice.

Through her work, Dakota explores the power of memory, the strength of our stories, and re-assessing our place in the Western world; a place that does not define our identity, but one that we have learned to adapt and evolve within. Through her art and words, she aims to make visible the ways our presence endures—not just in history books or museums, but in the everyday stories we tell, in the languages we speak, in the images we create, and in the countless ways we continue to define ourselves on our own terms.

Dakota’s work invites us to consider how Diné identity, like all Indigenous identities, is not fixed in time, but rather dynamic, fluid, and responsive to the environments we inhabit. Dakota offers that Indigenous cultures are not vanishing; they are evolving, adapting, and finding new forms of expression. This evolution doesn’t diminish their authenticity; it is a testament to their resilience and creativity.

With insights from her own research into photographic processes, natural dyeing, shared knowledge systems, and the movement of stories, Dakota opens up a dialogue that leads to a deeper understanding of her work and highlights the power of photography to visually hold space for the past, present, and future of a collective people.

We conclude the program with a live Q&A session with the webinar audience. For those unable to attend live, a recording is available to all registered participants.
