Climate Change and the Amazon Rainforest: A Photojournalist’s Story with Victor Moriyama

Join us for a conversation with photographer Victor Moriyama, a world-renowned Brazilian photojournalist whose work focuses on the environmental and sociological impacts of climate change in the Amazon rainforest.

During our evening together, Victor shares stories and insights from his long-term project documenting the violent occupation of the Amazon, shedding light on such issues as deforestation, land grabbing, and the vital role of Indigenous peoples in preserving the biome.

Victor’s harrowing images visually guide us through the stages of deforestation, beginning with the unlawful invasion of protected areas for the extraction and sale of timber, moving to occupation and subsequent processes of “cleaning” and burning the soil, the advance of livestock onto these areas, and the ultimate conversion of the land into high-yield monoculture farms for export.

Victor’s work tells the stories of the people, land, and animals cultures directly impacted by these processes, and sheds light on the political, cultural, and environmental factors at play. In our evening together, you are asked to witness a complex moment in the rainforest’s history, and reflect on the important role of climate change photography in documenting an everchanging natural world for future generations.

Victor also discusses the challenges faced in journalism by those documenting climate change, and reflects upon the importance of photographers listening to their inner voice in search of the issues that move us.
