Cuba is one of the most enchanting and captivating countries in the world, a pulsating and multifaceted blend of history, music, dance, gracious people and vibrant island culture. Join photographer Nevada Wier on this unique opportunity to engage with the Cuban people and to discover the allure that is Cuba through your lens.
This people-to-people cultural exchange offers the perfect tandem: the sophisticated, urban life of colonial Camagüey, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the verdant, rural countryside, frozen in time, just beyond the city limits. We explore the eclectic and narrow, winding streets of Camaguey, primarily in the large and well-preserved historical center of the city. From Camagüey, the social and cultural core of the province, we travel to an even slower lifestyle in the nearby farming villages and seaside towns that take you to a world that seems unchanged for the past fifty years.
The people of Cuba are the country’s treasure and its most dynamic force. They are friendly and generous of spirit, resourceful, resilient, and incredibly open to sharing their personal lives and their country with visitors. With your eyes and hearts open, we travel off the beaten tourist trail to better understand this intriguing and complicated country through direct exchanges with the Cuban people.
To offer you unparalleled access to the inhabitants and culture of Camagüey, two English-speaking, Cuban photographers serve as your local guides and translators for this educational program. In alliance with Cuba’s premier photographic organization, Fototeca de Cuba, and its director, Nelson Ramírez, our unique program allows U.S. participants a unique experience in Cuba through the photographer’s eye.
Our 8-day, U.S. government-approved educational program offers a cultural exchange with the Cuban people as well as a rich photographic educational experience. Photographing on the move in a foreign country requires the combination of technical expertise, culture competence, intuitive awareness, curiosity and a dash of panache. This program tackles the challenges of photographing with creative intent while on the move with a digital camera. Nevada discusses how to combine technical, practical, and creative aspects of travel photography in order to get an image that elevates itself above the usual travel clichés. One-on-one review sessions with Nevada and two group image reviews during the week that are shared with local Cuban photographers offer feedback on images made and advice given for improving your photography.
With your camera as your entrée into people’s lives, this inspiring week with Nevada expands your photographic life as well as your understanding of the inhabitants of this beguiling island and opens the door to their quickly changing world.
True to the requirements of a people-to-people General License with U.S. Treasury Department, Picturing Camagüey focuses on educational exchanges with the Cuban people and recording their amazing lives with our cameras.Additional Information
