Inspired by the beauty of the human form, with its simplicity of line and complexity of emotion, photographers have examined the figure with their imaginations and lenses since the beginning of the medium. The underlying goal of this immersive week with Greg Gorman is to explore figure and form in new and unique ways, ways that push the edges of this time-honored artistic pursuit.
Greg focuses on teaching his participants how to see and interpret light as it applies to both portraiture and the human figure, as well as how best to communicate with the talent in front of the lens. Emphasis is placed on improving your photographs compositionally as well as refining your creative voice.
The class begins with an overview lecture from Greg on his nearly 50-year career as a photographer, followed by a personal open-ended forum with a look at each of the participant’s work so that everyone has a better understanding of what the week holds in store.
Greg leads daily lighting demonstrations in the studio or on location to offer up his vision and approach before turning the reigns over to his participants under his supervision for the day. Models, locations, and lighting gear are provided for the participants. The class is divided into teams and—in The Workshops state-of-the-art lighting studio and on location in the stunning Santa Fe area—each participant has the assistance of their team mates in helping them realize their vision with light modifiers such as silver/white or black reflectors, artificial lights including flash/ tungsten, and Greg’s current favorite lighting solution—LED’s to augment the natural light.
Greg is available to offer help and assistance throughout each day but encourages his students to find their own style and approach to further develop their own personal skills. He also leads daily morning critiques to review each individual’s efforts from the previous day.
This exciting week with master photographer Greg Gorman promises to push everyone's vision and creative passion as imagemakers to the next level and build the confidence to capture powerful images of figure and form on a more consistent basis.
A Week with the Masters
Join us in Santa Fe at the end of March for a special “Week with the Masters,” a unique week of photographic learning, inspiration, and collaboration with four contemporary masters of photography.
Sam Abell, Arthur Meyerson, Greg Gorman, and R. Mac Holbert are all great friends and collaborate together on photographic projects and often teach together, but never all four in one week—until now! This week in Santa Fe is one not to be missed.
Each master photographer is leading their own individual workshop, but they also join forces at various times throughout the week to offer their knowledge, wisdom, experiences, insights, and stories for all the workshop participants to enjoy. They share a recent body of photographs during a special evening image presentation, take part in a moderated roundtable discussion about where photography is headed, and join their classes together at times for demonstrations, lectures and socializing.
Enjoy the benefits of a workshop with a master photographer as well as the chance to participate in a week fueled by the collective power and collaborative nature of Sam, Arthur, Greg, and Mac.
