Lighting is arguably one of the most important aspects of a good photograph, yet many photographers cringe at the thought of having to use artificial light, especially under time constraints and critical situations. In this five-day workshop, Kevin Kubota shares tips and techniques for creating beautiful light anywhere—with the help of simple, inexpensive tools and minimal set-up and complication.
Through live demos, we address essential lighting skills, discovering which tools are worth their weight in your camera bag. As we explore the ways that shadows can add depth, mood, and interest to images, we learn to balance flash and ambient light exposures, resulting in perfect portrait lighting in any conditions. Kevin also shows us how to get the most from the speedlight, a common yet often misunderstood (and underestimated!) lighting tool. In we delve into Adobe Lightroom's image-enhancing capabilities and develop efficient workflows.
Tools we use include: speedlights and speedlight modifiers (LunaGrip or a medium-soft box for speedlights, etc.), wireless transceivers, variable neutral density filters, and colored gels for use with flash. To see Kevin’s camera bag of gear and recommended accessories, click here.
Each day we spend time in the classroom reviewing our images from the previous day then Kevin leads a lesson on new techniques. The remainder of the day we venture out into the inspiring Santa Fe area for portrait sessions with models and people we encounter.
As you practice and perfect these basic artificial lighting techniques, you find yourself ready to take on any portrait situation with confidence and create beautiful, dramatic images.
