What is a Master Class? It’s a limited-enrollment (8–12 participants max) workshop that offers you even greater access to our world-class instructors. Master Classes require a portfolio for admittance.
Technical advances to the iPhone (and iPad) over the past few years have expanded the creative possibilities to unimagined heights in the hands of artistic users. This new master class with iPhone maven Karen Divine is a unique opportunity to push your creativity further and create a body of work that tells a story.
We are based primarily in The Workshops lighting studio. This versatile space offers Karen the unique opportunity to inspire her workshop participants with its beautiful natural light as well as the opportunity to drop blackout shades and work with artificial light. You have access to a plethora of lighting equipment, grip gear, backdrops, props and, best of all, two experienced staffers to assist you in using it—no artificial lighting experience is required. Locations in and around Santa Fe are also used during the week.
Karen is excited about this new format and creating in the studio, adding, “If you’ve never worked in a traditional lighting studio, you will appreciate the chance to make images in a controlled environment. It's an arena that also allows for spontaneity and surprise to enter. We discover how the iPhone responds to artificial light on backdrops, giving us the opportunity to create dioramas and still life imagery. We capture fine-art portraits working with models. All this becomes the essential components we can use to create our composites.”
Each day we review work, discuss individual projects, talk technique, and glean inspiration from images by prominent artists, all the while focusing on creating a small but cohesive body of work.
As your imagination is unleashed by possibilities, you discover that, as Werner Herzog put it, “The problem isn’t coming up with ideas, it is how to contain the invasion.”
