Why are we moved by images? How do our choices of light source, light height, quality, and color of light affect the image? How do we create soft, rounded shadows? How do we light someone in a flattering way? How do we create drama? What are modifiers and how do they affect an image? What are the possibilities of fill? How can we create beautiful light on a tiny budget?
These questions and more are addressed over six group sessions with Rosanne and her studio team. We first review what the masters have created in painting and photography (including cinema), looking at catch lights, color, and emotional messaging. We then explore the basics of light patterns, light ratios, and color of light, as well as front and back lighting. Though we mostly work with natural or artificial continuous light, what we study also translates to strobes, both in studio and on location.
Regular assignments challenge you to reach your next level, regardless of individual experience or equipment. As we review assignments, we also learn to critique each other’s work in a positive way, while becoming better observers of light, shadow, and technique.
Those who are truly curious are invited to join Rosanne and discover the art of using light to make images that effectively tell stories and foster emotional depth.
Additional Information
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Amateurs, Advanced Amateurs
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:
Participants need a camera that can operate on manual, knowledge of shutter speed and aperture and how they work together, an understanding of how to use Adobe Lightroom and/or Adobe Photoshop, an understanding of how to make JPEG files from your RAW images; you must be able to download and select images using image editing software for class sessions. A commitment to doing the homework is critical!
NOTE: This is not a studio workshop, but if you have access to a studio, great! If you want to learn about strobes, you can rent them from your friendly photo rental place. If you want to use your speedlight, that’s fine too, as long as you already know how your particular light works.
SPECIAL NOTES:
Class will meet 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (MST) on Saturdays starting January 9 and ending February 13 (six online group sessions). Enrollment is limited to 10 participants.
Zoom Video Conferencing software (available for no charge from Zoom.com) will be used to facilitate the class sessions. Further details will be emailed to registrants.

Santa Fe Workshops always aims to produce a high-quality experience for our online attendees. That said, variables including regional and local internet provider speeds, traffic on Zoom's servers, and your own computing hardware can contribute to a less than ideal streaming event. While we do our best to minimize the impact of these variables, they are outside the control of Santa Fe Workshops.
Please Note: During the online registration process you will be asked about housing and meals. Answer no to both questions.
