To celebrate our 30th anniversary, Santa Fe Workshops Founder Reid Callanan has put together a unique workshop that explores the elusive idea of mastery and the importance of developing a path to unravel its secrets and discover its power. This week also focuses on building community and networking opportunities, plus having a fun time in magical Santa Fe is paramount.
To accomplish these goals, Reid has lined up a diverse group of master photographers that he has worked with over the past three decades. Through morning Skype sessions focused on personal paths to mastery, workshop participants are able to listen to, learn from, and engage with Jay Maisel, Cig Harvey, Nick Nichols, Joyce Tenneson, Paul Caponigro, and Albert Watson. In addition, afternoon visits to the local studios of Kurt Markus, David Michael Kennedy, Alan Ross, Norman Mauskopf, and William Clift provide points of departure for each participant’s individual path to mastery from these four photographic legends living in New Mexico. In between these numerous master sessions, Reid offers his insights and advice on each participant’s portfolio brought to Santa Fe as well as a few surprise location shoots specially arranged for this once in a lifetime program.
The Urban Dictionary defines mastery as “the act of being perfect and amazing at something.” The reality is very few people actually achieve true mastery, but it’s important for all of us mere mortals to be on a clear path to mastery. Being on this journey gives us purpose and direction, enables us to stretch and growth and offers us hope. The path is not a sprint but a long-distance run that takes self-awareness, persistence, motivation, connection, and passion. We are all, in some form, reaching for a higher level of seeing the world. A path to mastery leads us back to a childlike sense of wonder and we observe our creative lives with clarity and direction. As we progress on this journey our original and authentic voice begins to show itself and the latent power within all of us appears.
Life is short and our time learning and growing creatively is limited. Without guidance, we waste valuable time trying to gain knowledge and refine our skills. This week, we follow the examples set by our master mentors and are energized by their wisdom and brilliance as photographers.
Join Reid and his friends for a memorable week in the thin space known as Santa Fe.
