Nick Merrick, partner and founding principal of Steve Hall + Nick Merrick Photographers, is recognized as one of the leading architectural photographers working today. Nick's work gained notoriety as the long time senior photographer of Hedrich Blessing. He holds a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Nick is widely published and his work appears regularly in architectural and design journalsworld wide, including: A+U, Architectural Record, Architecture Magazine, Interior Design, Contract, and Graphis. His work is also featured prominently in books and monographs on Perkins + Will; Curtis Worth Fentress; Zimmer Gunsul Frasca; Krueck+Sexton and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, among others. Architect Magazine May 2011 issue, featured Nick and his working philosophy in their “Business Best Practices” section. With the artist Michele Oka Doner, Nick directed the video short film “A Walk on the Beach”, shown at Art Basel Miami 2011. Among Nick Merrick’s recent assignments are: the United Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport for Krueck + Sexton Architects; the U Health AMC Building, Coral Gables, Florida for Perkins + Will; the UCLA Wasserman Football Training Center for ZGF Architects; the Hilton Hotel The Main, Norfolk, Virginia for Cooper Carry; and the Kuwait Central Bank Tower for PACE and HOK.
Nick is a longtime instructor at the Santa Fe Photo Workshops and has lectured and exhibited widely. Concurrent with his architectural photography, Nick has continued to work with an 8X10 view camera, honing his ideas on pictorial construction and the mystery of simple facts, producing five distinct bodies of work: Eratini Portraits; Michigan Woods and Villages; Greek Landscapes; Simple Facts; and Cholla.
His work is in the collections of the Library of Congress; the Chicago History Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the George Eastman House; and the LaSalle National Bank Collection.
