Milestones offer both a perfect time for reflection and a chance to
thoughtfully map out the future. Santa Fe Workshops launched its
first series of summer workshops on Sunday evening June 10, 1990 in
the high desert of Northern New Mexico. Thirty years later we are still
based in Santa Fe, have touched thousands of creative lives, and are
still spreading our wings. This is a short story of our three decades.
The 1990s gave birth to The Workshops, a time for us to build a solid
foundation, and a winning reputation, for offering a high-quality
educational experience in a five-day workshop model. The enveloping
light and allure of the American Southwest drew multitudes of willing
participants. Film was king; Kodak’s Tri-X and Ektachrome reigned on
campus. Overnight processing enabled the speedy unveiling of a photographer’s vision, the work available for critique by morning. At the
end of the decade, the digital revolution was upon us with new and exciting
technologies. Film emulsion was replaced by digital sensors and
almost everything in the photographic world had to be rethought and
In the early 2000s, the transition from film to digital was in full swing
globally with The Workshops becoming an early adopter. We embraced
these new technologies and transitioned to a fully digital imaging facility. Gaining mastery with computers, software, and digital equipment was the focus of many of our workshops, yet the importance of the creative process was still at the center of it all. This was an exciting 10 years of growth.
In 2010, looking to expand our travel programs, Santa Fe Workshops
set its sights on the Caribbean. We navigated the choppy political waters
of the era to build one of the first educational programs to explore
Cuba. People-to-People Cultural Exchanges to the forbidden isle soon
developed into our most popular programming of these years.
Now in 2020, we begin our fourth decade — once again creatively
taking advantage of new technology and circumstance. We are
unveiling a suite of online experiences to complement our other
programs. Creativity Continues, SFW Online, and SFW: Perspectives
are all completely new initiatives, born over the past few months, for
the photographic and writing communities. Once again, The
Workshops is providing engaging opportunities to explore craft,
nurture vision, and ignite inspiration — true to our stated mission
from 30 years ago.
Our time-honored past gives life to a bright future, inspiring a new
generation of storytellers — both photographically and with the written
word. Many thanks to all who contributed to the 30-year success of Santa Fe Workshops. As we continue to expand this vital community, we hope to see you in one of our online programs this summer.
