Course Description

Photographers often say they use the medium to explore their curiosities and better understand the world and themselves. In fact, it’s not unusual for photographers to think of themselves as investigators of inner and outer phenomena, especially if they combine their craft with research and writing.

This eight-week online workshop brings these three pillars together to help participants create dynamic, authentic, and complete photographic projects that chronicle the subject of their choice, whether it reflects worldly concerns or something much more private and personal.

One of the hallmarks of photography is its ability to collect visual impressions of subject matter from multiple points of view over vast periods of time, under different conditions, easily and in rapid succession. Fine-art photographer Jason Langer recently published his own five-year photographic study, Berlin, and he shares his methods for combining research and writing with photography to create a compelling and personal photographic investigation that’s part social commentary, part memoir.

Jason offers one-on-one and group instruction on various aspects of a photographic project, including defining your audience, budgeting and funding, and, of course, the image-making itself. Three guest speakers add valuable input and their different perspectives on photographic projects over the course of the eight weeks. Whether you are interested in creating a photographic book and or an exhibition of your work, this workshop leads you through the necessary steps, from conception to final outcome.

about
Jason Langer

Jason Langer is best known for his psychological and noirish visions of contemporary urban life. Secret City, his first monograph published by Nazraeli Press, depicts night and dusk scenes of various cities with “carefully crafted compositions reminiscent of the symbolist photographers, and swathes of meticulously printed deep black tones characteristic of the gelatin silver process…as much Hopper and Raymond Chandler as Steichen” (Bomb Magazine).

Over the past two decades Langer has developed a photographic language which has been described variously as “cinematic” and “poetic,” “contemplative” and “iconographic,” as well as “haunting” and “romantic.” Avoiding staged tableaux on the one hand, and the “deadpan” aesthetic popular in much contemporary photography on the other, his images strive always to capture the unanticipated or chance moment, layered with timeless drama and dynamism.

He has published three monographs: Secret City (2006, Nazraeli Press) and Possession (2013, Nazraeli Press) and Twenty Years (Radius Books, 2015), spanning 20 years of his career. It is the first survey of his work.

A popular workshop instructor, Jason is also part of our Mentorship Program »
