COVID-19 Update: For all in-person workshops and trips in 2022, Santa Fe Workshops requires that all participants attending be fully vaccinated (per definition of the CDC) and provide proof of vaccination. This requirement applies to students, staff, and instructors.

Course Description

Since the 16th century when Spanish conquistadors brought them to North America, horses have been at the center of Western culture, and this workshop with fine-art photographer Helen K. Garber represents a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in equine energy. Members of Santa Fe’s equestrian community have invited us to photograph their animals at their ranches, and each one offers a different artistic challenge.

We begin our time together by looking at images from each participant; then Helen delivers a lecture on the history of the horse in photography, painting, and sculpture. After lunch we head to Helen's ranch to photograph her four Tennessee Walking Horses against the expansive backdrop of three mountain ranges.

Mornings we meet in the classroom, where we edit and process our assignments, while afternoons are earmarked for trips to the aforementioned local ranches. Mid-week, Helen introduces the subject of printmaking, and we develop our skills over the next few days.

Sunday evening we gather for a group dinner at a celebrated Southwestern restaurant. Monday is devoted to finessing our final prints in The Workshops state-of-the-art digital lab.

Come surround yourself with the autumnal beauty of northern New Mexico as you capture the inner spirit of the horse and transfer that expression onto paper.
