Travel and photography are perfect partners, one enhancing the other; which is why Smithsonian Journeys and Santa Fe Photographic Workshops are collaborating to bring a focused strategy to combining the two in order to enrich the travel experience.
Travel offers the possibility of eye-opening and life-changing journeys. Venturing out we unearth insights about other cultures and perspectives on our own lives. Travel transforms us and the opportunities are as broad and diversified as the world is wide.
Founded in 1970, Smithsonian Journeys, the Smithsonian Institution’s worldwide travel program, is the enduring leader in cultural and enrichment, expert-led travel, offering more than 350 departures on all seven continents. Like the Institution, our tours enrich our guests' lives and satisfy their curiosity about the world around them. We deliver vibrant experiences that uncover the authentic culture of each destination, providing access unavailable to most travelers.
Using smart phones, mirrorless cameras and DSLRs to make images, the world has fallen in love with photography. Apple, Sony, Nikon, and Google are just a few of the global corporations investing heavily in new technologies that record our lives in photographs. Social media’s use of photography has also changed the way we communicate. Traveling with a camera is a fascinating way to explore and discover an interesting destination.
Founded in 1990, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops is a world leader in photographic education. The Workshops offers over 200 educational programs per year in all aspects of the image-making process. World-renowned photographers lead programs in inspirational settings such Santa Fe, San Miguel de Allende, and Havana.
In 2017, Smithsonian Journeys and Santa Fe Photographic Workshops begin their unique programing with Santa Fe Photo Journeys. There are a few places in America where the drumbeat of heritage, culture, and landscape converge to create magic. Santa Fe, and its environs in Northern New Mexico, is one of these special locations. A place where land and sky dominate, a home to three distinct cultures and vibrant art scenes—Santa Fe, Taos and Abiquiú are historic and cultural centers that have attracted and welcomed visitors for centuries.
Smithsonian Photo Journey: Focus on Santa Fe explores authentic Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico, with its storied past and its current-day allure, with the camera as your interpreter. Lift the tourist veil and experience this stunning high-desert region with your Smithsonian Journeys expert photographer and a host of local guides including storytellers, historians, artists, scholars, and writers.
